UAE Heritage Sites Off the Tourist Trail
The UAE's history goes back thousands of years, long before the towers. These sites are quieter than the big museums, and many of them are free or very cheap to visit.
1. Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort, Abu Dhabi
Al Ain's sites are part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Walk the shaded paths of the oasis, where the ancient falaj irrigation system still waters thousands of date palms, then visit Al Jahili Fort nearby.
2. Hili Archaeological Park, Al Ain
Circular Bronze Age tombs around 4,000 years old, in a calm garden setting. Good for curious children and a short visit.
3. Mleiha, Sharjah
The Mleiha Archaeological Centre presents finds from the Stone Age to the pre-Islamic period, with guided tours to tombs and a fort nearby, plus fossil hunting and stargazing activities.
4. Al Bidyah Mosque, Fujairah
A small mosque of stone and mud brick, widely described as the oldest in the UAE still in use. The watchtowers on the hill behind give great views.
5. Fujairah Fort
One of the oldest forts in the country, restored and set against the mountains, next to the Fujairah heritage village.
6. Jazirat Al Hamra, Ras Al Khaimah
A coral-stone pearling village abandoned in the 1960s and now being restored as a heritage area. Visit at golden hour.
7. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Dubai
Wind-tower houses, narrow lanes, small galleries and cafes. Close to the creek, so you can combine it with an abra ride.
