Why a Microfiber Towel Is Kinder to Your Hair Than Cotton
Most of us grab a thick cotton towel and rub our hair dry without thinking. It feels effective, but it is one of the easiest ways to rough up your hair. Swapping to microfiber, and changing how you use it, makes a visible difference for many people.
Wet hair is at its most fragile
Each hair strand is covered by a layer of overlapping scales called the cuticle. When hair is wet it swells and stretches, and that outer layer is easier to lift and damage. Vigorous rubbing at this stage raises the cuticle, which shows up as frizz, dullness and, over time, split ends and breakage.
Why cotton makes it worse
- Loops catch the hair. Terry cotton is made of thick loops that grab strands as you rub.
- More rubbing needed. Cotton absorbs well but holds water in the fibre, so towels get heavy and damp, and we rub harder and longer.
- Slow drying time. The longer hair stays wet, the longer it stays fragile, and the more time on the hairdryer.
What microfiber does differently
Microfiber is woven from synthetic fibres finer than a strand of silk. The huge surface area pulls water off the hair quickly, so you can press and blot instead of rub. The smooth surface also creates less friction against the cuticle.
The honest part: the biggest benefit comes from the gentler technique microfiber allows. A microfiber towel used roughly will still cause frizz. Used properly, it shortens drying time and reduces the friction that causes damage.
How to dry your hair with microfiber
- Gently squeeze excess water out with your hands in the shower.
- Wrap the towel around your hair and press. Don't twist or rub.
- For long hair, work in sections and squeeze from root to tip.
- Leave it wrapped for 10 to 15 minutes, then let it air dry or blow-dry on a lower heat.
Who benefits most
- Curly and wavy hair: keeps curl clumps together and reduces frizz. Try plopping (see our curly hair guide).
- Coloured or bleached hair: already more porous and fragile.
- Long hair: less weight and tugging at the scalp.
- Anyone in the UAE heat: faster drying means less time under a hot hairdryer.
Keep your towel working
Wash microfiber without fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces absorbency, and avoid high heat in the dryer. Read our microfiber care guide for details.
The 150 × 90 cm towel in our microfiber towel set is large enough to wrap even long hair. Fold it in half for shorter hair, and keep the small towel for the gym.
