How to Pack for Travel: A Carry-On Method That Actually Works
Packing light isn't about owning special gear. It is about a simple routine you repeat every trip. This method fits a week of travel into a carry-on and a personal bag.
Step 1: Check the rules first
Carry-on size and weight limits vary between airlines and even between fare types on the same airline. Check your booking before you start. Liquids in hand luggage are generally limited to containers of 100 ml in a clear, resealable bag, although some airports now have scanners that relax this. Assume the strict rule unless you know otherwise.
Step 2: Plan outfits, not items
- Pick a colour palette of two or three base colours so everything mixes.
- Plan for 4 or 5 days of clothes for a week, and wash once or rotate.
- Wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane.
- Limit shoes to two pairs: one comfortable walking pair and one smarter or sport pair.
Step 3: Roll, then fill the gaps
Roll soft items like t-shirts and gym wear tightly; fold structured items like shirts. Put shoes along the base and stuff socks inside them. Use packing cubes or pouches to group items, so you don't unpack everything to find one thing.
Step 4: Swap bulky for compact
A hotel towel is not always available, and is never great at the beach or pool. A microfiber towel takes up about the space of a t-shirt, dries overnight in a hotel room, and doubles as a blanket on a cold flight.
Step 5: Keep essentials in your personal bag
- Passport, ID, cards, printed or offline booking details
- Phone, charger, power bank (power banks must go in hand luggage, never checked)
- Medication, in original packaging, plus a copy of any prescription
- A change of underwear and a t-shirt, in case checked luggage is delayed
- Empty water bottle to fill after security
Step 6: Separate clean from used
Bring a laundry bag or use a wet compartment for worn clothes and damp swimwear. A backpack with a separate shoe and wet pocket, like our sports mesh backpack, keeps it organised on the way back.
The 10-minute final check
- Documents and payment cards
- Chargers and adapters (the UAE uses Type G, the three-pin British-style plug)
- Medication
- Toiletries in a sealed bag
- Weigh your bag at home
