Beginner-Friendly Hikes and Wadis in the UAE
The Hajar Mountains run along the east of the UAE and offer real hiking, a short drive from the cities. These routes suit beginners and families with some outdoor experience. Hike from October to April only.
Trail access can change, and some wadis are closed after heavy rain or for conservation. Check recent reports before you go.
1. Wadi Shawka, Ras Al Khaimah
Several marked loops start near the dam, from short family walks to longer ridge routes. A good first hike.
2. Hatta trails, Dubai
A network of signposted trails around Hatta, with routes of different lengths and plenty of viewpoints over the dam.
3. Jebel Jais trails, Ras Al Khaimah
Higher up and cooler, with some marked trails near the top. Temperatures can be well below the coast, so pack layers.
4. Wadi Wurayah, Fujairah
Known for its waterfall and protected status. Access to some areas is controlled to protect the wildlife, so check what is open.
5. Al Rafisah Dam area, Khor Fakkan
An easy walk around a reservoir framed by mountains, with a visitor area and boats on the water.
6. Fossil Rock, Sharjah
A short but steep scramble with wide desert views. Go late afternoon for the sunset.
Safety rules that matter
- Never hike in summer heat. Even in winter, start early.
- Carry more water than you think: 2 to 3 litres per person for a half-day hike.
- Watch the weather. Wadis can flood fast after rain, even rain far away in the mountains.
- Tell someone your route and expected return time. Mobile signal is patchy.
- Stick to marked trails and turn back if a route feels beyond you.
- Wear proper shoes with grip. The rocks are loose and sharp.
Day-hike packing list
- Water, electrolytes and salty snacks
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
- Light first-aid kit
- Fully charged phone, offline map, power bank
- Quick-dry towel for wadi pools
- Headlamp in case you finish later than planned
